For many in war-torn 1944, love blossoms in the dance hall, and airman Arty Clarke is no exception. He’s a thinker and a dreamer; however, it’s not the beautiful, talented dancer in his arms—his best friend Jean—who inspires his dreams. For when his gaze meets that of Technical Sergeant Jim Johnson, Arty dares to imagine a different dance.

Their love is forbidden, by both the armed forces and the law, but with Jean’s cunning and support, Arty and Jim try to bridge the distance between them and find true love despite the danger and a life-threatening disaster that could destroy Arty’s dreams for good.

Can the pair stand strong together, no matter how many skies have fallen?

Part of Love is an Open Road (Don’t Read in the Closet 2015)
Based on the prompt

Life isn’t a fairy tale. These two know that better than most. These men are survivors. Against all odds, they made it through hardships, separation, and war. They clung to hope where little existed and, as the skies fell around them and the world was torn apart, found strength in loving each other.

Suddenly, the war was over. Battlefields lay silent and troops prepared for the journey home. These two were more than ready. They had experienced enough loss, grief, and pain to last ten lifetimes. The country they left behind may not have been ready to accept them, but they were prepared to live no matter how many skies had fallen.

You can tell me the story of how these men met, but what I really want to know is what happened to these men after this photo was taken. Did their love endure the trials of a return to civilian life? Were they able to overcome the trauma of war and find peace together?

Sincerely,
Tiffany

I read the 296 pages in 24 hours....as a rule I am not a fast reader....but this I book I could not put down for any reason! The story is fiction but it sums up life of the LGBT community.....pursacution......hattrad....FEAR....uneasiness......rejection that many before us have gone through and many still do around the world.....simply because our hearts fall in love with someone of the same gender.......when it comes to love the heat does not always see color, race, or gender......but the world never slows its biggetry and hattrad for those of use that see life and love differently .....read this book.....you will laugh.....cry and just get pissed off......but seeing life as one hellacious roller coaster ride......LOVE can live on!!!!!!!
I am rapidly becoming a fan of WWII M/M romances and this one just tops the cake. Its very special cover lured me in, and even though the story is laconic in many respects (i.e., not a shoot-em-up), it is brilliantly laid out for us because it's almost in documentary style.

Arty and Jim and Jean and Charlie come alive from the start, yet it's like watching a well-made movie that chronicles the way the war went for some in England and the U.S. who were not in the trenches but were important parts of the support team. The people are followed closely, and their intimacies are right there for all to see, but not too much behind the closed doors.

There is laughter and tension and heartbreak and tragedy all along the way, but there is also deep and abiding love which leaves our quartet off in the 1960s with contentment that reflects the coming age. I loved this book, took me on a very sentimental journey.
When Skies Have Fallen by Debbie McGowan was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last one that is for sure. When picking up this book I was very curious about, one because it been so highly recommended but also because I met Debbie before reading any of her books and because I had done so it is always fun to see if you can find some of the persons essences in their writing.

When Skies Have Fallen takes place during end of the WWII, where men were men and women were women, or at least where a small part of society decided what a man and a woman were, a world where being gay was considered to be a crime and you could actually be put in jail for taking part in so-called homosexual acts.

I’ve been sitting here for hours trying to find the right words to describe this book because to make it fair it is not a love story, it is not without it but the moral of the story isn’t will there be love, the moral of the story is how far will you go to be free to love your partner so the world knows. To not live a life in fear and all that, how long will you go to make sure someone else will have those rights too and will you give up trying if fighting for that right will kill you?

This story made me think of something I often ponder in regards to romance stories, as they are so aptly called, we make fun of it about being romance authors, some even feel shame in saying they write romance(ish) stories as if saying so is admitting to picking your nose or worse. To me, it is so funny that we put so much shame into something that is something that we all (including me even if I am about as romantic as a dirty gym sock) is to be loved. OK, it doesn’t mean having to be IN love but to be loved and accepted for who we are, no matter who that is (unless it is the chainsaw slayer, Luca’s dad or someone equally horrible). But the idea of love is somehow what keeps us all going and moving forward.

This book is full of love, in love, deep friendship love, sibling love, love for thy country, love for thy neighbor and so on and so forth. This story is the beacon of love and hope, that we all live in a world that we all have the possibility to help change to the better for ourselves as well as thy neighbor. That there are people out there willing to fight battles that might not be their own but are willing to bend over backwards and then some because in doing so they help someone else be free, free to love the person that is the world to them in When Skies Have Fallen this is Jean and Charlie, better and truer friends than them you have to look for and they are someone how just as important for this story as the two lead men, Jim, and Arty, if that is what you want to call them. Because even though the battle of the story is theirs there wouldn’t have been the strength and hope or even possible for them to go through what they did and come out as well as they did on the other end without their friends fighting right there, side by side with them.

So, if you want to read a story out there that is a hope bringer and a wake-up call giving you a glimpse on how far we come, but how we do not want to become again and therefore have to keep fighting all these battles of hate no matter what they are for, then you have to read When Skies Have Fallen. Thank you, Debbie for this amazing story of love and hope!
Review WHEN SKIES HAVE FALLEN (novel by Debbie McGowen)

Debbie McGowen’s historical novel, When Skies Have Fallen, won the 2016 Lambda Literary Award for best Gay Romance. And I can see why. The prose is stellar, as in well-crafted, and every plot point is earned; the characters, as well as their arc, are well-drawn examples of what queer folk have had to go through in the past, and sometimes still, in the present, toward both self-awareness, and self-acceptance.

The story, set in England, follows the trials and tribulations, both during and after World War II, of ARTY, a British Royal Air Force officer, and JIM, an American airman, who fall in love.

The novel explores the social-psychological-political elements of how people navigate the--to borrow from Jane Austen--‘Pride and Prejudice’ of their inner-selves, and that of society’s own, literal, prejudicial nature. In short, just as there have always been self-affirming queer people (as it is in this particular novel set during WWII) who love themselves without shame, there have always been bigots who challenge their right to live and love in peace.

And McGowen makes room for a story that celebrates true, time-honored love, and even patriotism. A full range of emotions is elicited. At times, the prose brings about smiles, or laughter, even joyful tears. Other times, there are feelings of anger, and tears of sadness for both Arty and Jim; as individuals, and as a couple, they are exposed to deplorable familial and societal treatment.

But balanced with such turmoil, McGowen explores the loyal friendships that Arty and Jim share with others who fully accept them for who they are—despite the fact that laws criminalize them for being gay.

So, too, McGowen doesn’t compromise her multi-dimensional characters; they struggle, but live to survive no matter the injustices they are subjected to, the men remain faithful and loyal in the truth of their love for each other.

On an even more personal note, I just love that although When Skies Have Fallen is presented as a historical gay romance novel, it’s so refreshing to see a story in the genre that truly is about long-term relationship development; while sex certainly finds itself expressed between Arty and Jim, this is about their monogamous, and (at least during the historical frame/time period of the story) bond through what they vow as a “common-law” marriage.

In short, stories such as this, that celebrate gay identity with pride, particularly that are set in a historical context, are vital to our history—no matter our sexual orientation.

Although When Skies Have Fallen exposes injustices of the past that may, at times, enrage the reader, there is power in such storytelling, because it highlights how far we’ve come, as of 2016, in terms of individual LGBT rights and advances in recognized partner status, and the evergreen power of love, even with injustices that do still exist. This is a universal, and ultimately uplifting story.
